Performance as Practice
Performance as Practice is a practice-based workshop, focused on interdisciplinary performance.It is open to artists of all mediums, disciplines, and levels who are interested in a physical practice. Participants will be introduced to various approaches to performance practices, including: concept development, physical and mental preparation, experimentation, collaboration, and execution.
We will introduce our personal approaches and practices such as: various warm up techniques that heighten sensitivity, tasks that strengthen the relationship between each other and the space, and experiments working with objects and materials in performance. We will focus on different aspects, elements, disciplines, modes and/or methods of performance.
The goal of the workshop is to strengthen and/or initiate the development of a new, or existing, personal practice; which is applicable to solo and group situations.
Performance as Practice Workshop began as a semester-long workshop at The University of Applied Arts in Vienna, March – June, 2014.
What to bring :::::::::

– Comfortable, warm clothes and shoes that are good for running/moving
– Book and pen/pencil for writing and drawing
– A yoga mat or a blanket
– Food / Snacks / Water (we will provide lunch)
About the facilitators :::::::::
William “Bilwa” Costa is an artist who works in the performing, sound, and visual arts contexts. He works internationally, generating research, lab, and performance projects, actively cultivating opportunities for artists to work together on new interdisciplinary experiments.
Teena Lange is Performance Art Curator and Artistic director of Grüntaler9, she will be present during the workshop. The possibility of having a curator within a workshop environment, allows a constant feedback situation and opens up ways of interaction and development.
Workshop participants will have the opportunity to work with Teena, and possibly perform at Grüntaler9, sometime after the workshop.
