There is great precarity in life and sometimes the greatest undertaking we can offer is stand up. Stand with resilience, with all of our everything to be witnessed, in silence, with determination, allowing others to see fragile humanity. Perhaps more so than ever, in the story under which we humans sway, we must stand.

We must stand under the unbearable weight of our humanity. We must stand with our ancestors, our elders, our youth, our everyone. We must learn how to bear the weight, we must let it transform us… to become something, anything, greater than ourselves.

We must bear the weight for as long as we can. It is time to acknowledge the weight that we already all bear. We must help one another stand.

This is a continuation/collision of work performed at BIPAF in 2013 dealing with endurance, strength and the pain of self-awareness and work created that focuses on maternal ancestry and familial lineage.

::::::::: Rae Goodwin works in an expanded practice that examines aspects of maternal ancestry as it influences the construction of identity, along with gender-based assumptions about freedom, the unknown and communication. In her performance work she works with layers of intimacy and risk, often asking the audience members to help her in order to complete the work. Their involvement helps shapes the work.

Goodwin received an MFA from Winthrop University and has shown work at Panoply Performance Laboratory, Grace Space, Atlanta Contemporary Art Center, McColl Center for Visual Art, Dimanche Rouge, 10/12 Gallery in Brussels, defibrillator gallery, SUPERNOVA, BIPAF and MPAB festivals and other venues. Goodwin will be offering a version of this piece at LIVESTOCK in Belfast this June. She also serves as Director of Art Foundations at the University of Kentucky. This project is funded in part by the College of Fine Arts at the University of Kentucky.
